The Blue-and-White Porcelain Vase with Floral Phoenix Motif and Handles from the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (circa 1404) exemplifies the refined elegance and symbolic richness of early 15th-century imperial ceramics. Crafted from high-purity white kaolin clay and coated in a clear, high-fired glaze, the vase showcases deep cobalt-blue motifs vividly contrasted against a pristine white background. Twin phoenixes, emblems of imperial majesty, grace the central body as they soar among entwined lotus scrolls—symbols of purity, rebirth, and infinite vitality. The ruyi-shaped cloud bands around the neck invoke heavenly blessings, while the elongated lotus panels at the base echo spiritual enlightenment and Buddhist harmony. The balance of symmetry and motion in the design demonstrates masterful control by Jingdezhen artisans. The imported cobalt pigment, likely sourced from Persia, gives the decoration its striking intensity and depth. With its sculptural ear-shaped handles and graceful profile, this vase unites natural, celestial, and regal iconography in a single artistic vision—an embodiment of Yongle-era cosmology and courtly sophistication.
