- The O'Neill Cylinder is a massive rotating space settlement concept proposed by American physicist Gerard K. O'Neill in his 1976 book The High Frontier. The design features two counter-rotating cylinders, each about 5 miles (8 km) in diameter and 20 miles (32 km) long, which spin in opposite directions to cancel out gyroscopic effects. This counter-rotation stabilizes the megastructure, allowing its longitudinal axis to stay continuously aimed directly at the Sun to harness solar energy. Inside the cylinders, a fully functional artificial world is created with normal Earth gravity (1G), generated by the centrifugal force of the rotation. The interior habitat is divided into three habitable "valleys" featuring soil, rivers, and cities, which alternate with three giant longitudinal windows. Massive movable mirrors mounted outside the windows control the influx of sunlight, allowing the station to simulate natural day-night cycles and seasons to maintain a self-sustaining ecosystem. The primary advantage of this orbital colony over colonizing planets like Mars or the Moon is the ability to recreate ideal, Earth-like living conditions right in outer space. O'Neill envisioned constructing these habitats in Lagrange points using materials mined from the Moon and asteroids, bypassing the high energy costs of launching supplies out of Earth's gravity well. Today, this visionary concept remains a staple of hard science fiction — inspiring locations like Citadel in Mass Effect and Cooper Station in Interstellar — and serves as a foundational blueprint for modern space entrepreneurs aiming for long-term human survival beyond Earth. #interstellar #physics #astrophysics #Science@ʜᴏʟᴠᴇᴋ

- Solid, liquid, gas - the states of matter we meet every day are only the beginning. What makes them different is how their particles move, arrange themselves, and interact. In a solid, particles remain near relatively fixed positions. In a liquid, they stay close but move past one another. In a gas, they spread out to fill the available space. But temperature is only part of the story. Pressure can completely change which state is stable. That familiar graph - a phase diagram - maps the states of a substance across different temperatures and pressures. Its boundaries show where transitions happen. At the triple point, solid, liquid, and gas can coexist. Beyond the critical point, the distinction between liquid and gas disappears, creating a supercritical fluid. Push conditions further, and matter becomes even stranger. Plasma contains free electrons and ions, allowing it to conduct electricity and respond collectively to electromagnetic fields. It fills stars and lights up lightning. Near absolute zero, certain particles can form a Bose–Einstein condensate: many occupy the same quantum state, behaving as a coherent quantum system on a scale we can observe. Under enormous pressure, hydrogen can become metallic, with electrons able to move through it and carry electric current. The simplest element in the universe can behave in a radically unfamiliar way. And the list does not end at four or five. Physics distinguishes dozens of states and phases, depending on how they are classified: superfluids that flow without viscosity, supersolids that combine crystalline order with superfluid behavior, and quark–gluon plasma, where the constituents of protons and neutrons are no longer confined inside individual particles. Many emerge under conditions far beyond everyday experience. Matter is more than what something is made of. It is also how its constituents organize themselves - and what the universe allows them to become. #StatesOfMatter #Physics #edit #QuantumPhysics #Science@pitochk
