- What If Electronics Could Actually Grow With Living Cells? Researchers at the University of Hong Kong have developed a new type of semiconductor designed to interact directly with biological systems. Instead of relying on rigid silicon structures, the technology uses soft, water-rich hydrogel materials that more closely resemble the environment of biological tissue. The remarkable part is that living cells can grow within the hydrogel while the electronic components continue to function. The work, published in Science, introduces three-dimensional hydrogel transistors capable of creating direct electrical interactions with living cells. This represents an important step toward biohybrid electronics—technology designed not simply to operate alongside living tissue, but to communicate with it. The goal isn't necessarily to make faster computer chips. It's to develop electronics that can potentially interface with biological systems, with future applications including medical implants, neural interfaces, biological sensors, and other technologies that connect electronics with living tissue. Imagine a future where electronics don't just sit inside the body… They actually communicate with living cells. So what should this technology be used for first?
